While a working knowledge of Soviet society is not necessary to get absorbed in this book, I think it probably helps provide some context to the reader. I really enjoyed it but I clearly missed lots of the message in light of reading the LA Review of Books review. It was more overtly political, the setting felt much dingier, and the characters felt much more grounded. It certainly had a different feel from its Western cousin. This was my first foray into Soviet science fiction. With that being said I do have some thoughts on the experience of reading the book. I cannot hold a candle to it and highly recommend giving it a read. It delves into the background of the authors and the context they were writing in.
